Olight Seeker 3 Pro: Owner’s Review

5.0 rating

Recently Olight sent us a sample of the Seeker 3 Pro to review in advance of its introduction.

The Olight Seeker 3 Pro Flashlight is bright, long lasting, and, infinitely variable. It has settings from 5 lumens to 4200 lumens that allow it to vary between a nightlight for a baby’s room and the brightness of 3 1/2 high beams on a vehicle. On the lowest setting the Seeker 3 Pro runs up to 15 days straight.

Specs for the Seeker 3 Pro

The Seeker 3 Pro is amazingly bright. Its settings are divided into Turbo (4200 lumens), High (1200 lumens), Medium ((300 lumens), Low (50 lumens, and Moon (5 lumens). To put this into perspective, a car’s headlight varies between 700 lumens on dim and 1200 lumens on bright. That means that the Seeker Pro 3 is as bright as 3 1/2 bright headlights! At the same time, the nightlight in a baby’s room is somewhere between 4 and 10 lumens.

Throw rate is how far the beam of light projects from where you are standing. This is important when you are using the beam to light your path for walking or when you want to see something that is not close. At Turbo, the Seeker 3 Pro projects 250 meters, which is 820.21 feet.

On high it projects 130 meters which is 426.509 meters. The medium setting projects 65 meters or 196.85 feet, and the low setting projects 25 meters which is 82.021 feet. The moon setting does not project.

The Seeker 3 Pro is bounce proof at 1.5 meters. Its Ingress Protection rating is IPX8 (fully waterproof). Its weight is 7.05 ounces including the battery, and its length is 5.2 inches.

Run Times for the Seeker 3 Pro

In order to conserve power, the Seeker 3 Pro steps down its brightest beams after an initial time has lapsed. This means that the Turbo settings will stay at 4200 lumens for 2.5 minutes before reducing itself to 29% power. Then it will remain at 29% power for 127 minutes before stepping down to 14% for 35 minutes. Consult the chart above for more specifics.

Proximity Protection Function of the Seeker 3 Pro

At the highest settings, the Seeker 3 Pro has a built-in proximity protection function that keeps it from overheating. When the flashlight is in one of the top 3 settings, if the front lens proximity sensor detects an obstruction nearby, the brightness will reduce automatically.

We tested this in the video above by holding the flashlight within a few inches of a door. The light dimmed until we moved the beam far enough away from the door that the danger of overheating was averted.

The proximity protection feature can be deactivated by double clicking the knob switch within 5 seconds after it automatically dims. The feature will be resumed with the next use of the flashlight.

The light will dim automatically if it becomes too hot in order to protect the user from burns. A light this powerful does heat up pretty quickly.

The Instructions for the Seeker 3 Pro

My one complaint about this product (and most products out there) is the nearly microscopic writing on the instruction sheet. Olight has provided written instructions on a map-folded page that is roughly the height and width of the flashlight itself.

With the help of the zoom lens on my smart phone I was able to read the instructions and the specifications, but I could not do so with my naked aging eyes, even when equipped with reading glasses.

Once you get past the tiny print, the instructions themselves require a bit of inference because they are a combination of pictures, symbols, and actual words.

The Holster for the Seeker 3 Pro

The Seeker 3 Pro comes with a holster that fits snugly. It can fit into the holster only beam-up because the head of the flashlight is slightly wider than the body. This allows the holster to be more compact and take up less valuable space on your waistband.

To attach the holster to your waistband, you have your choice of the quick method or the more secure method. You can unsnap the top band and run it between your belt and your pants to get a quick attachment that does not require unbuckling your belt.

If you want a more secure attachment, leave it snapped and thread your belt through the back loop as you are getting dressed for the day.

The holster has a plastic lanyard loop that you can use if you want to hang the flashlight around your neck or hang it on the wall for easy access.

The latch mechanism for the holster is not the usual hook and loop tape. Instead, Olight went the extra step by incorporating a buckle. You press the big circular button at the center of the buckle to open it and retrieve your light, and then close it by inserting the button back into the middle of the buckle from the upper end.

Grommets at the top and bottom of the holster allows you to see at a glance whether your light is on and provides a means for dissipating condensation on a hot or cold day.

The thick and solid canvas material of the holster is lined with a light flocking to protect the finish of the light. The stitches on the holster are even and secure.

How to Use the Seeker 3 Pro

You don’t just hit a switch to turn on the Seeker 3 Pro. To prevent accidental activation, turning it on is a 2-step process. First, press the blue button and the battery level indicator lights on the right side of the switch will light up. Next, rotate the dial at least 90 degrees and the brigtness indicator lights on the left of the switch will light up. Once those lights come on, you can press the switch to turn on the flashlight.

You will then be able to achieve infinite variability between 300 and 4200 lumens by continuing to turn the dial. Rotating the dial clockwise increases the brightness while rotating the dial counter-clockwise decreases the brightness. The light will stay on for the predetermined times listed above or until you press the blue button again to turn it off.

To activate the 5 lumen moonlight mode, press and hold the button for more than 1 second after you have deactivated the safety lock by turning the dial at least 90 degrees.

After you turn it off, you have about 30 seconds to reactivate the light before the safety reactivates. At that point you have to press the button again and turn it to the circle on the lower left corner to restart the light.

To enter the 4200 lumen turbo mode, deactivate the safety and then double click the button. Double click again to deactivate turbo.

To activate the strobe light, triple click the button after deactivating the safety. To end the strobe mode, press and hold the button or single click the button.

Charging the Seeker 3 Pro

Olight’s magnetic charging process is quick and easy. Attach the blue circular magnet to the charging plate on the tail cap of the flashlight and plug in the charger. The charger plugs into to a USB outlet, or you can provide your own adapter and plug it into the normal wall outlet. The light is equipped with a 5000 mAh rechargeable 21700 lithium battery.

If the battery light is red, it is time to recharge. Green means the battery is charged. Olight states a full charge takes about 4.5 hours. The charging cable is up to 2 amps.
