A flash in the pan: the part of a flintlock musket that held the firing powder was its pan. Sometimes the primer flashed but did not explode, so the action did not result in a bullet being shot. Various political candidates have proven themselves to be a flash in the pan because they look brilliant for a brief moment but never accomplish anything.
A real pistol: pistols are quick to load and shoot. If you are a real pistol, you are fun loving and high spirited. Granny Clampett from the Beverly Hillbillies was a real pistol.

Your Own Private Shooting Range: How We Set Up Our Range
We chose the house we live in now because it had two shooting ranges. That came in handy when we decided to open a business centered around firearms education. We have upgraded the pistol range to make it suitable for Concealed Weapons Permit (CWP) classes. The rifle range will be next. To make our range…

How Far and Fast Bullets Travel: Video and Chart
In 2017 a Canadian sniper in Iraq actually shot an ISIS fighter 2.2 miles away using a McMillan TAC-50 sniper rifle chambered in .50 caliber 750 grain Hornady ammunition. The sniper had to calculate the bullet’s trajectory against the wind velocity and keep in mind the speed of the earth’s rotation to do that, with the help of a spotter who determined the best moment to make the shot.
The effective range of a gun is an entirely different matter. That is how far you can shoot with the likelihood of hitting your target. For the M107 the effective range is 5,907 feet, still over a mile. The effective range of a BB gun is 1080 feet, about a fifth of a mile.
How to Avoid Looking Like a Good Target
I have noticed a difference in bearing with those who carry concealed. Sometimes I think I can tell who is armed just by noticing posture. A woman with the ability to defend herself doesn’t scurry toward her destination, hoping that no one will notice her existence. Having been trained in self-defense, she knows how she appears to a potential attacker. Having armed herself, she knows she can use her weapon. Having made the decision to take on the extra responsibility that comes with being armed, she is on the alert for the need to protect herself and her children.
Socialism and the Brownshirts
After World War I Germany was humiliated by the Allies in the Treaty of Versailles. They were forced to demilitarize, pay reparations, and surrender large areas of territory. This and the economic disarray that followed led to resentment and anger on the part of the German people, paving the way for the nationalist sentiments that Hitler rode to power. Hyperinflation and then the Great Depression left Germany in dire economic straits and ripe for a dynamic, angry new leader. The SA (Stormabteilung), also known as Storm Troopers or Brownshirts, was a violent paramilitary group founded by Adolf Hitler in Munich, Germany in 1921. Identifiable by their brown uniforms and serving austensibly as a security force for Nazi rallies, they used violence and intimidation to influence voters in local and national elections. In the Beer Hall Putsch of 1923 Hitler led 600 Brownshirts in a failed coup attempt against the democratic Weimar government. They instigated violent street clashes, targeting Jews and leftists. Anti-capitalist Ernst Rohm became involved and grew the SA to 2 million or more members by 1933.
Buying a Gun at a Gun Show: The Rules Still Apply
The Federal Firearms Licensed (FFL) dealers at the show must comply with all recordkeeping requirements. This includes recording the place of the sale. They may sell you a pistol or revolver if you are at least 21 and a resident of the state in which the show is held, after you pass a background check. The same applies to a frame, receiver, or firearm having a pistol grip that expels a shotgun shell.
What If I Drop My Gun? Modern Safety Features
You are not likely to discharge most modern guns by dropping them, but there are consequences. You can scratch the paint, dent the frame, gouge out some metal, or push a piece out of alignment. If you drop your gun, inspect it for damage. Rack the slide on a semi-automatic, check the alignment of the hammer, and check for dirt in the action. If anything is amiss, take it to a gunsmith. Firing it damaged can do further damage to the gun or to you.
Stop a Gunfight Before It Starts With Situational Awareness
Now that you have the ability to defend yourself, do your best never to need to draw that weapon. Robert Heinlein said “An armed society is a polite society.” If you realize that an interaction gone awry could lead to the use of a gun, you are more likely to hold back that biting comment when someone cuts in line or takes too long to prepare your order. The most important part of situational awareness is prevention. If you don’t feel safe, leave. If you can’t leave, behave in a mild but assertive manner.
The Best Materials for Holsters
Holsters can be made from canvas, or even lace, but mostly you will find leather and Kydex. Leather is the hide of animals, either softened to fit the contours of your body or stiffened to hold the gun firmly. Kydex is a thermoplastic acrylic polyvinyl chloride (PVC) composite. It is tough and rigid and can be manufactured to fit the exact specifications of your gun. Kydex is water and sweat-resistant, scratch-resistant, and unlikely to stretch or shrink.
